Sad state of the zoo

Sir: I recently happened to visit Karachi zoo and I am most upset by what I saw there. The animals are in a deplorable state; they lie around in the heat without adequate cooling, many visitors are young pranksters who do nothing but taunt the animals, which goes unchecked by the zoo authorities and many of the lions and tigers seem underfed. I know that this country hardly takes care of its human citizens but at least some thought should be given to the many beautiful animals we have locked up in the zoo for our own entertainment. Can we not even feed them properly? Can we not give them a good home away from home? I implore government authorities to take care of the many animals we have imported from other countries as well as the ones we have captured from the wilderness here in Pakistan. The zoo is a place of recreation for us humans also and we would like to see a healthy living environment for these many breeds.

Controlling pollution

Sir: Pollution has become a major issue for our government and is getting out of control. Karachi is among those cities that suffer from pollution of many kinds. A lot of noise pollution is created by old vehicles. The problem arises when people

start honking their horns near hospitals where, because of this, heart patients have to suffer the most. Then there is air pollution, which is caused by smoke emitting vehicles and factories. The ozone layer is getting weaker day by day as a result of such smoke, which is also threatening mankind through global warming. Another problem due to which thousands of people die every year is water pollution. In some areas of Karachi people do not even get pure water to drink. Therefore, I would request the authorities and departments concerned to organise a series of seminars on creating civic sense among the people. Steps should also be taken in building plants to purify water, which is also the basic need of the people.
